Frequently Asked Questions
Routes, fares, and service changes as Everett Transit joins Community Transit.
What is the Community Transit and Everett Transit consolidation?
In simple terms, consolidation means that the City of Everett will be served by Community Transit starting April 1, 2027.
In November 2026, the Everett City Council and the Community Transit Board of Directors voted to bring Everett into Community Transit’s service area through an interlocal agreement forming an expanded transit system that will serve all Snohomish County residents.
How does this change benefit me?
Starting April 1, 2027, there will be one transit system serving all of Snohomish County, which will eliminate inefficiencies and confusion.
There will soon be more transit service that is easier to use. Here are some improvements that will be introduced in 2028:
- More transit connections – more bus routes and more one-seat rides making it easier to travel between Everett and other places in the county.
- More destinations – providing transit to more job centers and more popular locations in Everett.
- More transit options – new ways to get around including a Zip Shuttle zone in Everett, offering on-demand, shared rides.
- More frequent bus service all day – Bus service in Everett will have shorter wait times and fewer transfers, including earlier morning service and later evening service.
- Direct connections to future light rail stations in Everett.
Will I have to pay more for my bus fare than I do today?
Community Transit will maintain Everett Transit’s current fares through at least April 2028. Right now, the Community Transit adult fare is $2.50 and the Everett Transit adult fare is $2. Any change to the current fare structure would be approved by Community Transit board action following staff analysis and public input.
Will existing bus routes stay in place?
Everett will officially join Community Transit on April 1, 2027, but you won’t see any changes to your bus service right away. Everett Transit bus routes will remain mostly the same through 2028 when bus route and schedule changes will begin to be implemented in phases.
What will happen to Everett Transit employees?
Community Transit is committed to honoring the expertise of Everett Transit employees and their connection to the local community. The agreement outlines retaining represented and administrative employees who will officially become Community Transit employees on April 1, 2027.
How will the sales tax change in Everett?
Starting April 1, 2027, the portion of Everett’s sales tax that pays for public transit will increase from 0.6% to 1.2%, matching the rate paid in the rest of Community Transit's service area in Snohomish County. That is an additional 6 cents for every $10 you spend on taxable purchases in Everett. Most groceries, prescription medications, and gasoline are exempt from this sales tax.
The additional funds will help pay for more bus service, longer service hours, and better transit connections.
How is Everett represented on the Community Transit Board of Directors?
The Community Transit Board of Directors will be reconfigured to include City of Everett representation. This reconfigured Board will approve any service or fare changes to shape the details of an integrated and expanded transit network, along with other policy actions.
Will Community Transit provide shuttle services like Everett Transit did for local events like Sorticulture?
In 2027, Everett Transit service will remain as it is today, including special event service. There are still questions about how service will be provided in the future, and you’ll have a say in planning that future service. Community Transit evaluates requests for special event service on a case-by-case basis. When considering requests, Community Transit reviews factors, including the availability of fixed-route bus service, compliance with Federal Transit Administration (FTA) charter service regulations, anticipated ridership demand, the cost of providing service, and the availability of vehicles and operational staff.
Is paratransit service changing in Everett?
Community Transit will continue to provide the same paratransit service to all Everett paratransit riders who are enrolled in the program as of March 31, 2027. Everett Transit has traditionally had an expanded eligibility criteria for paratransit service, allowing any city resident 65 or older who does not have another form of transportation to use paratransit. Also, all Everett paratransit eligible riders can go anywhere in the city of Everett.
What will happen to the red Everett Transit buses?
You will see red Everett Transit buses on the road at least through March 2028. It will take some time before the buses are repainted with Community Transit logo and colors.
